Parkway/Byron Tunnel - Night Work

As part of the Stage 2 O-Train Light Rail Transit (LRT) project, crews and equipment will be working overnight in the Parkway/Byron Tunnel.

Cut and cover tunnel structures (concrete tunnel floor, walls, and roof) along Kichi Zìbì Mìkan Parkway will be completed next year, along with tunnel backfill operations. Overall, at the end of December the Parkway/Byron Tunnel was 85% complete.

What:
Night work is required in the Parkway/Byron Tunnel, as work proceeds on the cut and cover tunnel structures activities. Night work may include excavation (digging with a small excavator) and hauling, installation of form work, concrete pouring, utility installation, snow clearing, fuelling, equipment maintenance and servicing, and site housekeeping.

Note: Pile drilling, rock breaking, vacuum truck excavation is NOT permitted overnight.

When:
KEV anticipates that periodic night work will be required throughout 2024. Night work will occur subject to a valid noise by-law exemption, in addition to daytime activities on weekdays and weekends.

Daytime hours of construction are Monday to Saturday, 7:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. and 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. Sunday and on Statutory Holidays.

Why:
To complete critical project work that is time sensitive and/or required during off-peak hours.

Where:
Parkway/Byron Tunnel from Rochester Field along Kichi Zìbì Mìkan and along Byron Linear Park to north Lincoln Fields.

Anticipated Impacts:
Noise and vibration from crews and heavy equipment may be expected.

All construction vehicles and equipment, working overnight on the Parkway/Byron Cut and Cover Tunnel, will be equipped with broadband back-up alarms. Trucks use approved haul routes and workers and contractors park in designated parking areas.

Generators are required to run equipment in the tunnels and/or wrapped in noise barriers.

Site lighting for overnight work is required to maintain safe working conditions for workers. The use of lights will be minimized where possible and special attention paid to ensure that it is not impacting nearby residences.
