We’re going electric! – OC Transpo’s zero-emission bus fleet
By 2036, OC Transpo plans to have a zero-emission bus fleet.
Our plan to purchase only zero-emission buses going forward was approved by City Council on June 23, 2021.
The first four electric buses are now in service. An additional 26 battery-electric buses will be added to the fleet soon, and a total of 354 zero-emission buses will be phased in by 2027. Based on funding availability, by 2036 we aim to have a fully electric bus fleet.
Transitioning to a zero-emission bus fleet will have the following benefits:
- No pollution, no greenhouse gas emissions from new buses
- Reduced operating costs
- Lower noise pollution on city streets
This is an exciting change for OC Transpo and the City of Ottawa, as we transition from a 100 percent diesel bus fleet to one that is zero-emission. In coming years, OC Transpo will be monitoring new developments in bus technology so we can continue to provide the most cost effective, comfortable, and clean energy transit solutions for our customers. We look forward to welcoming you onto our first electric buses this year!
